According to two people familiar with the matter, Toyota stopped production at its Tijuana plant in Mexico for a total of 19 days in February and March this year. The factory produces Tacoma pickup trucks. They said technical problems at the factory were also a factor in the shutdown.

Toyota is currently working with some suppliers to relieve the pressure. However, one of the people familiar with the matter said that due to a shortage of workers, some parts manufacturers are barely able to maintain production.

Supply disruptions are the latest headache for the Japanese auto giant, which has also been grappling with the impact of the safety testing certification scandal at its subsidiary Daihatsu, as well as governance issues at each of its two other subsidiaries.

Two of the people familiar with the matter said the scandals prompted Toyota to delay the start of production of electric vehicles in the United States by six months, until around June 2026. Previously, Japanese media had reported on the postponement of the launch of electric vehicles.
